How To Prepare Your Home For a New Pet

Getting a new family pet is exciting for everyone, whether you have had a pet before or looking at getting your first one. In this blog we look into the best ways to prepare your home for the arrival of your new friend.

Block Off Any Pet Free Areas

Before you even arrange a date to pick up your new pet it is important to prepare your home for its arrival. The first step is to block off any areas you do not wish your new pet to investigate, this can be certain rooms or corners. This can be done by placing furniture in the way or even a baby gate for the first few months whilst your pet learns where it is allowed to go.

Create A Secure Area

The last thing you want is your new pet escaping or hurting itself. Therefor much like you would do with a new baby, look for dangerous objects or exits that are open. Move sharp objects or cleaning liquids that could be mistaken for food. Also make sure that windows are never open wide enough for your pet to fit through, the same goes with doors, always remember to close them behind you. This may seem tedious at first but it will only be until your pet knows the rules.

Create A Safe Haven For Your Pet To Sleep

Even though pets love to be with their owners, they also like some alone time. Which is why it is important to make sure that you keep your animals bed out of the hustle and bustle of the house. It needs to be somewhere that is quiet as they will be sleeping there and somewhere they will not be pushed out or stood on. If you choose a place that you don’t think is right for your pet, no worries you can easily change it but might have to train them again.

Clean Your Home Thoroughly

This point is especially important if you are getting a puppy. Being so small and new, they can get ill easily even with the slightest little thing. That’s why it is crucial to clean your house from top to bottom to eliminate the chance of your pet getting ill until they have had all their correct jabs.
